Lagos, Nigeria – December 10, 2023 – President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, urged West African leaders to prioritize good governance and collective prosperity to prevent military takeovers and unconstitutional changes of government.
Speaking at the 64th ECOWAS Summit, President Tinubu emphasized that good governance is vital to securing popular support through socio-economic transformation and development. He argued that addressing poverty, inequality, and other concerns through good governance will address the root causes of military interventions.
President Tinubu highlighted the ECOWAS’ commitment to upholding democracy and outlined specific measures against unconstitutional changes of government. He emphasized the importance of re-engaging with nations under military rule and providing them with technical and material support to facilitate a democratic transition.

The President lauded Liberian President George Weah for his exemplary conduct in conceding defeat and congratulating his opponent in the recent election. He also acknowledged former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his commitment to democracy after losing his re-election bid.
Addressing the recent formation of the “Alliance of Sahel States” by some ECOWAS member states under military rule, President Tinubu called it a distraction and emphasized the region’s commitment to ECOWAS integration. He highlighted the organization’s significant achievements and its focus on improving people’s lives through good governance.
Regarding recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau, President Tinubu reiterated ECOWAS’ zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government. He expressed support for the democratically elected governments in both countries and urged leaders to remain committed to upholding democracy.
President Tinubu concluded his address by emphasizing that democracy will prevail if leaders fight for it. He urged his fellow leaders to stand strong and united in their commitment to democratic values and good governance.
