Nairobi, July 14, 2023 – H.E. Mr. Abshir Omar Jama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, was an active participant in the 43rd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council held in Nairobi. This high-profile event served as a platform to address critical issues and agendas, ranging from security and food security to the African Union budget and the progress made in the Union’s institutional reform.

The two-day meeting, spanning Thursday and Friday (July 13-14), focused on crucial matters essential to the progress and development of African countries. With the aim of overcoming challenges and obstacles, leaders sought strategies to advance towards their collective aspirations.

Another vital aspect on the AU’s agenda is the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (5th MYCM) of the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities, the Regional Mechanisms, and the African Union Member States, scheduled for July 16, 2023, also in Nairobi, Kenya. This meeting aligns with the overarching theme of the year 2023, “Acceleration of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation.”

During the sidelines of the 43rd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, Minister Abshir Omar Jama held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. The discussions focused on strengthening the bonds of friendship and enhancing cooperation between the two neighboring nations.
