President Cyril Ramaphosa recently welcomed Mr Malik Agar Eyre Nganyoufa, the Deputy President of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan, for a courtesy call on July 13, 2023. The primary focus of the meeting centered around the ongoing conflict in Sudan and international initiatives aimed at resolving the violence.
The visit followed a telephonic discussion between President Ramaphosa and Mr Nganyoufa on July 2, 2023, highlighting the importance of the topic at hand.
During the meeting, Mr Nganyoufa provided a comprehensive briefing on the current conflict situation in the Republic of Sudan. In response, President Ramaphosa expressed deep concern over the prolonged nature of the conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The President urged the Transitional Sovereign Council, including the Sudan Armed Forces, to prioritize efforts towards a peaceful resolution for Sudan.
South Africa firmly believes that sustainable peace in Sudan can be achieved through an inclusive dialogue process. This approach aims to establish lasting peace for the Sudanese people while upholding the commitments made by all parties to the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA), signed on October 3, 2020.
President Ramaphosa also conveyed South Africa’s willingness to contribute to the efforts aimed at ending the conflict and violence, should it be requested by the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the African Union, or any other stakeholders involved in the process.
Both leaders committed to maintaining regular communication to stay updated on the evolving situation in Sudan.
