Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho – In an effort to strengthen bilateral ties and foster regional cooperation, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Alvin Botes, has arrived in the Kingdom of Lesotho. Tomorrow, on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, President Cyril Ramaphosa will undertake a working visit to Lesotho, where he is scheduled to launch Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a landmark infrastructure initiative that involves the construction of a series of dams, tunnels, and water transfer systems. The project, which is jointly managed by the governments of Lesotho and South Africa, aims to harness the abundant water resources of the Lesotho highlands and deliver clean and reliable water to the Gauteng region in South Africa.
Phase 1 of the project, which was completed in 2003, has already demonstrated its significance by significantly augmenting water supplies to South Africa’s economic hub. The successful completion of Phase 2 is expected to further enhance water transfer capabilities and ensure a sustainable water supply for the growing population and industrial needs of Gauteng.
During his visit, President Cyril Ramaphosa will be accompanied by high-ranking government officials and representatives from the water and infrastructure sectors. The launch of Phase 2 will mark a crucial milestone in the longstanding partnership between Lesotho and South Africa, solidifying their commitment to regional development and cooperation.
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project has had a transformative impact on the Kingdom of Lesotho, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and improved infrastructure. The project has not only provided Lesotho with a reliable source of revenue but has also facilitated the development of hydroelectric power generation, irrigation schemes, and increased access to potable water for local communities.
In addition to the launch ceremony, President Cyril Ramaphosa and his delegation will engage in bilateral talks with their Lesotho counterparts to discuss various issues of mutual interest, including regional stability, trade relations, and ongoing development projects. The visit will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the existing ties between the two neighboring countries and explore avenues for further collaboration.
The presence of President Cyril Ramaphosa in Lesotho underscores the commitment of both nations to working together towards shared prosperity, regional integration, and sustainable development. The launch of Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project marks a significant milestone in the history of this groundbreaking initiative and promises to bring immense benefits to the people of both Lesotho and South Africa.
As the visit concludes, President Cyril Ramaphosa and his delegation will depart from Lesotho, leaving behind a strengthened partnership and a renewed determination to address common challenges and seize opportunities for growth in the region.
