Slovakia’s President, Zuzana Čaputová, took to Twitter on May 17th, 2023, to emphasize the importance of collective action in safeguarding Europe’s values and ensuring lasting peace. Her message came in the wake of the Council of Europe Summit held in Reykjavik, where she joined forces with 46 other European leaders to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to defending democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

In her tweet, President Čaputová underscored the significance of unity, stating, “The only way to protect our values and safeguard peace in Europe is by doing so jointly, in unity.” This declaration echoes the sentiment shared by the leaders who convened at the Council of Europe Summit. The summit, an essential platform for cooperation and dialogue among European nations, offered an opportunity for leaders to discuss and address pressing issues impacting the continent.

The Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik, Iceland, brought together heads of state, diplomats, and representatives from 47 member countries. The central theme of the summit was the defense of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law—principles that form the bedrock of European society. The leaders deliberated on the challenges facing the region and the strategies required to overcome them collectively.

President Čaputová’s affirmation of solidarity and commitment to democratic principles resonated strongly among attendees. By standing united, the leaders pledged to counter any threats to the core values and fundamental rights that underpin Europe’s diverse nations. This collaborative approach reinforces the vision of a Europe where individual freedoms, equality, and the rule of law are protected and celebrated.

The summit served as a platform for the exchange of ideas and the identification of shared priorities. The discussions focused on strengthening democratic institutions, addressing the rise of populism, tackling corruption, promoting gender equality, and ensuring access to justice for all. Through open dialogue and mutual support, the participating leaders sought to chart a path forward that would bolster Europe’s resilience in the face of evolving challenges.

President Čaputová’s active participation and resolute commitment at the Council of Europe Summit underscore Slovakia’s dedication to upholding democratic values within the European community. Her leadership and advocacy for human rights and the rule of law have garnered international recognition, and her voice carries significant weight in shaping regional discourse.

As the summit drew to a close, the joint statement issued by the 47 leaders highlighted their shared determination to protect the foundations of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across Europe. By joining forces and embracing unity, these leaders aim to build a stronger and more prosperous Europe that guarantees the rights and well-being of all its citizens.

President Zuzana Čaputová’s message resonates with citizens across Europe, reminding them of the collective responsibility to defend democratic values. The Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik stands as a testament to the power of unity and collaboration, signaling a renewed commitment among European leaders to address the challenges of the present and secure a brighter future for the continent.
