The Ukrainian ambassador to South Africa, Liubov Abravitova, has requested an urgent meeting with Defence Minister Thandi Modise following accusations made by the US Ambassador to SA, Reuben Brigety, that South Africa has supplied Russia with weapons. This allegation has been met with disbelief and consternation from Ukrainian officials, who have long been wary of Russia’s expansionist tendencies.

Abravitova, who has been a vocal critic of Russian aggression in the region, expressed her concern over the allegations and urged the South African government to take swift action to address the situation. She highlighted that the allegations made by Ambassador Brigety are very serious and could have grave implications for the stability of the region. She also called on the South African government to investigate these claims thoroughly and to take appropriate action to prevent any further arms transfers to Russia.

The Ukrainian embassy has also expressed concern over the potential impact of the allegations on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists have been fighting against government forces since 2014. The embassy is deeply concerned that any arms transfers to Russia could be used to further destabilize the situation in Ukraine and to prolong the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

The South African Presidency has also expressed concern over Ambassador Brigety’s remarks, stating that they undermine the spirit of cooperation and partnership that characterised recent engagements between US government officials and a South African official delegation led by National Security Special Advisor to the President, Dr. Sydney Mufumadi.

The Presidency has also noted that a Russian vessel known as Lady R docked in South Africa, and allegations have since been made about the purpose of the voyage. While no evidence has been provided to support these allegations, the South African government has pledged to institute an independent inquiry to be led by a retired judge.

Defence Minister Thandi Modise has not yet commented on the request for an urgent meeting with the Ukrainian ambassador.

The allegations made by Ambassador Brigety come at a time of heightened tension between the US and Russia, with both nations engaged in a war of words over a range of issues, including cyber attacks and human rights abuses. The situation is also likely to put South Africa in an awkward position, as the country has historically maintained a policy of non-alignment and has sought to maintain cordial relations with both the US and Russia.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen on the outcome of the South African government’s inquiry into the allegations and what implications they will have for relations between the US, Ukraine, and Russia. The gravity of these allegations and their potential impact on the stability of the region cannot be overstated. It is crucial that the South African government conducts a thorough investigation and takes appropriate action to prevent any further arms transfers to Russia.
