MTN Tops Brand Finance South Africa 100 Ranking as Most Valuable Brand

MTN, the telecommunications giant, has claimed the title of South Africa’s most valuable brand, according to the annual Brand Finance South Africa 100 2023 ranking. The brand’s value has seen a remarkable recovery and growth in recent years, now standing at R74.3 billion after a 24% increase in value in 2022. This puts MTN’s value up by 50% from pre-pandemic levels, surpassing its closest competitor, Vodacom, whose brand value is R39.8 billion.

This marks the twelfth time that MTN has secured the top spot in this ranking in the past thirteen years, showcasing its dominant presence in the South African market. While the telecommunications sector claimed the top two spots, the banking sector emerged as the most valuable sector overall, with an aggregate brand value growth of 28% in 2022.

The banking sector also secured five out of the top ten spots in the ranking, with Standard Bank leading the pack in third place, followed closely by Absa and First National Bank in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The combined brand value of the eleven banking brands included in the ranking was R146.5 billion, surpassing the next most valuable sector, telecommunications, by R25 billion.
