ADDIS ABABA — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called on journalists to approach their work with care, urging them to look beyond surface information and uphold the country’s best interests during a media forum on June 25.
Speaking to representatives from public and private media outlets, Abiy stressed that journalists must navigate the complexities of today’s digital age, where anyone can share opinions without verifying facts. He described this era as one demanding a careful balance between absolute and relative truth, with the media serving as a bridge to raise public awareness.
“A diligent journalist critically examines information and prioritizes the nation’s well-being, avoiding rushed criticism,” the Prime Minister said. He warned against lazy reporting, which he defined as jumping to conclusions and blaming without sufficient evidence.
Abiy highlighted the powerful influence of media on both current and future generations, noting that irresponsible journalism can cause harm. He urged media professionals to rely on their training and integrity, avoiding baseless conspiracy theories that lack foundation.
“Criticize, ask, but do not lie,” Abiy concluded, reminding journalists of their vital role in shaping society and fostering informed dialogue.
