MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE – Malawi’s Vice President Dr. Michael Usi says his participation in Mozambique’s 50th independence anniversary is a deliberate show of solidarity aimed at strengthening the historic bond between the two neighbouring countries.
Dr. Usi was speaking on Wednesday at Machava Stadium in Maputo, where thousands gathered to mark half a century since Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese rule. He described the occasion as an opportunity to reaffirm diplomatic and economic cooperation between Lilongwe and Maputo.
“The relationship between our nations runs deep. President Daniel Chapo visited Malawi recently and signed several bilateral agreements,” said Usi. “Being here builds on that progress and shows our commitment to working together.”
Usi added that his presence was also a gesture of unity and support to Mozambicans, noting that President Chapo had acknowledged the importance of Malawi as a close ally during their last engagement.
Mozambique’s President Chapo, addressing guests at the national celebrations, welcomed leaders from across the region, saying their attendance reflected the strong ties among Southern African countries.
Heads of state who joined the golden jubilee included President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Zimbabwe’s President Emerson Mnangagwa, and Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
