ACCRA, May 29 — Ghana has formally invited the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to begin discussions on restructuring its debt, according to a letter sent by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson and obtained by Reuters.
The letter, dated May 21, was addressed to Afreximbank and outlined the government’s intention to engage the lender and its advisors in talks aimed at finding mutually acceptable debt solutions.
Forson said the move is intended to keep Ghana aligned with the debt sustainability requirements of its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and to ensure consistency with the Comparability of Treatment principle set by the Official Creditor Committee.
