LUSAKA – The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has announced the introduction of a new series of banknotes and coins, set to be launched on March 31, 2025. The new currency will consist of six banknotes (K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, K10) and six coins (K5, K2, K1, 50N, 10N, 5N), with no changes to the value, the Zambian currency code (ZMW), numeric code (967), or symbol (K).
The redesigned currency will feature elements inspired by Zambia’s rich heritage, showcasing the country’s unique flora, fauna, and famous waterfalls. The new design aims to strengthen national pride and unity, aligning with Zambia’s national motto, “One Zambia, One Nation.”
This initiative follows approval from the BoZ Board in July 2021 and reflects the Bank’s commitment to providing secure, efficient, and user-friendly currency. The updated notes will incorporate advanced security features to combat counterfeiting and safeguard the integrity of the currency.
A Statutory Instrument (SI) will soon be issued by the Minister of Finance and National Planning, outlining the procedures for exchanging the old currency for the new series. The SI will specify exchange points and the duration of the exchange period across the country.
To support the transition, the Bank of Zambia will launch a national awareness campaign to educate the public on the new currency, its features, and the exchange process.
