Accra, Jan 31 – President John Dramani Mahama has named Johnson Asiamah as Ghana’s next central bank governor, subject to approval by the Council of State, the presidency announced Friday.
Asiamah, who has spent more than 23 years at the Bank of Ghana, previously served as second deputy governor from 2016 to 2017. He is set to replace Governor Ernest Addison, who will retire at the end of March and begin leave on February 3.
A statement from the president’s office described Asiamah as experienced in monetary policy and financial stability. His appointment comes as Ghana faces economic challenges, including high inflation and concerns over key industries.
Mahama, sworn in earlier this month, has pledged to improve the economy and address unemployment. His government has not yet published its full economic policy plan. The Bank of Ghana recently cited this lack of clarity as a reason for keeping its key lending rate unchanged.
