South African film producer Anant Singh has been appointed to the Global Arts and Culture Council (GACC), announced during the inaugural meeting at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The GACC was established to position the arts and culture sector at the forefront of a shifting global landscape. As the world transitions from an industrial era to a more interconnected society, the council seeks to use creativity to promote unity and prosperity.
Singh, known for his films addressing issues such as apartheid, HIV/AIDS, and gender-based violence, highlighted the importance of artists in voicing the concerns and stories of communities. He noted that the GACC will provide a platform for artists to contribute to global dialogues.
Singh also attended a plenary session led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who spoke to delegates ahead of the G20 Summit in South Africa later this year. The summit is seen as an opportunity to showcase South Africa’s achievements on the global stage.
On January 23, Singh participated in a panel discussion titled “An Artist’s Path Out of Injustice,” continuing his advocacy through film. This marks his 25th consecutive attendance at the WEF Annual Meeting since receiving the WEF’s Crystal Award in 2001.
