SAO PAULO, Jan 17 – Nigeria has been confirmed as a partner country in BRICS, the multinational bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Brazil’s government announced on Friday.
In a statement, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, Itamaraty, acknowledged Nigeria’s efforts in advancing cooperation among Global South nations and its commitment to reforming global governance. Brazil, which will hold the bloc’s presidency in 2025, noted that these priorities align closely with BRICS’ objectives.
“With the 6th largest population globally and the largest in Africa, Nigeria also stands as one of the continent’s largest economies, sharing common interests with other BRICS members,” the statement read.
Nigeria now joins eight other nations across Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia with partner status in the bloc.
