Zambian Foreign Minister Hon. Mulambo Haimbe led his country’s delegation to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) virtual Extraordinary Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation on January 4, 2025. The meeting addressed political and security concerns in Mozambique following violent protests after the country’s General Elections on October 9, 2024.
During the session, Minister Haimbe expressed concern over the escalating violence in Mozambique and warned of its potential to destabilize the region. He reiterated Zambia’s support for Mozambique and emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to address the unrest.
The meeting was preceded by a Senior Officials’ meeting, where Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation in Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged Mozambique’s collaborative approach to resolving the situation and called for all parties involved to engage in dialogue.
The Ministerial discussions will be followed by the Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit on January 5, 2025, which will involve leaders from Mozambique. The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation is tasked with maintaining peace and stability in the region.
