On January 4, 2025, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened an extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika to address the ongoing political and security situation in Mozambique following its recent elections. The meeting was held in preparation for the SADC Organ Troika Summit scheduled for the following day.
The session, chaired by Honourable Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, focused on the violent protests that have erupted in Mozambique, leading to fatalities and extensive property damage. The meeting was attended by Honourable Nancy Tembo, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Honourable Mulambo Hamakuni Haimbe, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, representing their countries.
Ambassador Kombo called for greater regional cooperation to help Mozambique address the crisis, stressing the need for peaceful and diplomatic solutions. He referenced SADC’s previous actions, including a statement from the Chairperson of the Organ, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, who had urged political leaders in Mozambique to remain calm and pursue constructive dialogue instead of resorting to violence.
