The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has dismissed allegations accusing Nigeria and other member states of sponsoring terrorism. The Commission released a statement from its Abuja headquarters on December 26, categorically denying the claims as baseless.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding role in promoting peace and security in West Africa and across the continent. Nigeria’s leadership in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has recorded significant success in combating regional insecurity, was cited as evidence of the country’s commitment to regional stability.
ECOWAS described Nigeria as a generous and peace-driven nation, rejecting any suggestion that it could be associated with terrorism sponsorship. The Commission urged states in the region to avoid making accusations without evidence and called for a focus on dialogue and stability.
This follows Nigeria’s continued efforts in peacekeeping and counterterrorism, solidifying its position as a key player in the fight against insecurity in Africa.
