Dec 22 – Cyclone Chido’s death toll in Mozambique has increased to 94, according to the country’s disaster management agency, AFP reported on Sunday. The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique a week ago, leaving widespread destruction in its path.
Earlier, Mozambique’s Institute for Natural Disasters reported 73 fatalities on Thursday, but the numbers have since risen as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
The Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, one of France’s poorest overseas territories, has also suffered significant damage. Authorities in Mayotte confirmed 35 fatalities but fear the actual death toll could be in the thousands.
Olamide Harrison, the International Monetary Fund’s Mozambique representative, stated on Wednesday that the nation’s 2024 economic growth projection of 4.3% is likely to be revised downward due to the cyclone’s impact and ongoing civil unrest following the October elections.
