Pretoria, South Africa – December 7, 2024
The South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA) has successfully hosted the first-ever BRICS+ Creatives and Cultural Forum, a virtual gathering that explored the role of cultural diplomacy in shaping global influence. Held under the theme, “How can BRICS+ leverage cultural diplomacy to strengthen global influence?” the event brought together leaders, policymakers, and creatives from BRICS+ and African nations.
The forum, conducted on December 7 via Zoom, featured a comprehensive program that began with a panel discussion addressing cultural diplomacy’s potential to foster mutual understanding, economic growth, and sustainable development. Discussions also examined strategies for building networks among creative professionals across BRICS+ nations.
Prominent speakers included Ruphus Matibe from South Africa’s Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture; Evgeniya Tolstoguzova of TV BRICS International Media Network; Beth Arendse, Director of the South African Creative Industries Incubator (SACII); and Emmy award-winning film director Lebogang Rasethaba.
The discussions touched on various themes, including the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on cultural practices. Beth Arendse pointed to technology as a driver of innovation in the creative economy, while Ruphus Matibe highlighted AI’s role in shaping cultural sovereignty.
The event also featured specialized breakaway sessions focusing on specific art disciplines such as theatre, film, music, and visual arts. Led by experts like Tshegofatso “Eli Zaelo” Mhlongo and Simphiwe Skhakhane, these sessions provided in-depth discussions and networking opportunities for participants.
The forum concluded with a vibrant virtual cultural celebration showcasing music, art, and theatre performances that reflected the rich diversity of BRICS+ nations.
Key takeaways included the need for enhanced cultural collaborations, increased investment in the creative industries, and the establishment of a BRICS+ Creative Council to foster long-term partnerships.
