Ramaphosa Leads G20, Pledges Solidarity

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially assumed the G20 Presidency, promising a year focused on solidarity, equality, and sustainability. In his acceptance speech at the G20 Closing Ceremony, Ramaphosa praised Brazil’s successful presidency and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the global forum.

The South African president highlighted the importance of civil society engagement and vowed to continue the innovative approach initiated by Brazil. He emphasized the role of civil society in shaping the future and acknowledged its contribution to South Africa’s democratic journey.

South Africa’s G20 presidency will prioritize the needs of developing countries, particularly in Africa. Ramaphosa stressed the importance of addressing debt burdens, enhancing climate finance, and fostering sustainable development.

The South African leader also emphasized the need for global solidarity in addressing crises like the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Sudan. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation in combating public health emergencies, such as the recent mpox outbreak in Africa.

As South Africa prepares to host numerous G20 meetings throughout the year, Ramaphosa extended a warm welcome to all participants. He expressed confidence in the collective ability of the G20 to address global challenges and build a more equitable and sustainable future.
