Birmingham, UK – Renowned Nigerian artist Abdulrazaq Awofeso has created a new sculptural commission for MAC Birmingham’s Waste Age: What can design do? exhibition. The artwork, titled Okrika, delves into the environmental and social consequences of fast fashion.
Awofeso, known for his distinctive use of repurposed wooden pallets, has crafted a series of sculptures that evoke the allure and excess of the fashion industry. By incorporating elements of second-hand clothing, often referred to as “okrika,” into his work, the artist highlights the global flow of textiles and the impact of consumer culture.
The exhibition, which runs until February 23, 2025, explores the role of design in addressing pressing environmental issues. Awofeso’s Okrika serves as a powerful reminder of the need for sustainable practices and responsible consumption.
In a recent interview, Awofeso discussed his inspiration for the work: “I was fascinated by the idea of these pallets, which are used to transport goods across borders, and how they mirror the global movement of clothing. Both are constantly in transit, carrying stories of trade, migration, and consumption.”
By combining his artistic vision with a keen eye for social and environmental issues, Abdulrazaq Awofeso continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art. Okrika is a thought-provoking exploration of the complex relationship between fashion, culture, and sustainability.
