London – Ed Cross Gallery is proud to present Akube Remix, a new exhibition by renowned Nigerian artist Abdulrazaq Awofeso. The exhibition, which opened on October 31st, features a series of sculptures that explore themes of identity, consumption, and environmental impact.
Awofeso’s signature style, characterized by the use of repurposed wooden pallets, is on full display in this latest body of work. The artist takes discarded materials and transforms them into intricate sculptures that evoke the allure of luxury fashion. By juxtaposing the rough texture of the wood with the refined imagery of designer brands, Awofeso challenges the superficiality of consumer culture and the environmental consequences of excessive consumption.
Akube Remix builds upon the artist’s ongoing exploration of the impact of globalization on African cultures. The sculptures in this exhibition are inspired by second-hand clothing, often referred to as “okrika,” that is shipped from Western countries to Africa. Awofeso’s work invites viewers to consider the complex relationship between the global fashion industry and the communities it affects.
Abdulrazaq Awofeso is a highly acclaimed artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. His solo exhibitions include Out of Frame at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and Broad Streets at Ed Cross Gallery in London. His work is also part of numerous public and private collections, including the British Government Art Collection and the Benetton Imago Mundi.
Akube Remix will be on view at Ed Cross Gallery until December 20th.
