Mwami/Mchinji, Zambia/Malawi – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has commended the Mwami/Mchinji One Stop Border Post (OSBP) for significantly enhancing regional trade efficiency.
A recent assessment conducted by the SADC Secretariat found that the border post, connecting Zambia and Malawi, has made substantial progress in streamlining customs procedures and reducing transit times. The 24/7 operation for tourism and passenger traffic, along with the 12-hour daily operation for commercial goods, has contributed to smoother cross-border movement.
The OSBP, inaugurated in December 2022, is a major milestone in the implementation of the SADC Protocol on Trade. It aims to facilitate trade, reduce costs, and improve the overall business environment in the region.
The SADC team observed positive developments, including reduced border agencies and improved coordination among key agencies like Customs, Immigration, and Standards. This streamlined approach has led to faster clearance times and reduced congestion, particularly for the 300 trucks that pass through the border daily.
