JOHANNESBURG, Oct 22 – South Africa views Russia as a key ally, President Cyril Ramaphosa told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a bilateral meeting on Tuesday, just before the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

Ramaphosa praised Russia for its support during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, saying, “We continue to see Russia as a valued ally, as a valued friend who supported us right from the beginning.” The remarks were captured in a video shared by the South African government’s news agency.

The meeting took place on the eve of the BRICS summit, where leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa will gather to discuss a range of global and economic issues.
