Lusaka, Zambia – The Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Ambassador Han Jing, highlighted the strong bilateral ties between China and Zambia during a public lecture commemorating the country’s 60th Independence anniversary on October 17.
Addressing a crowd of students from various Zambian universities, Ambassador Han emphasized the “comparative advantages” of the China-Zambia relationship, citing political mutual trust, economic complementarity, and people-to-people friendship as key factors. He noted that the relationship, forged by leaders like Chairman Mao Zedong and President Kenneth Kaunda, has endured for decades.
The ambassador recalled President Hichilema’s state visit to China last year, which led to the upgrade of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership. He also mentioned the recent FOCAC Summit, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties.
Ambassador Han outlined China’s plans to enhance practical cooperation with Zambia in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and mining. He also emphasized the importance of President Xi Jinping’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative in addressing global challenges and promoting international cooperation.
The ambassador expressed China’s readiness to work with Zambia on international and regional affairs, particularly in amplifying the voice of the “Global South.” He also encouraged young people from both countries to strengthen exchanges and continue the legacy of friendship.
In her keynote speech, Zambian Vice President Ms. Mutale Nalumango recounted the country’s history of independence and expressed gratitude for China’s support, including the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and assistance in overcoming the colonial blockade.
