Lusaka, Zambia – October 17, 2024 – The Zambian government has taken a significant step towards ensuring the timely and affordable availability of essential medicines for its citizens. The Ministry of Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, an Indian pharmaceutical company.

According to Health Permanent Secretary for Donor Coordination, George Sinyangwe, the government is committed to providing quality healthcare services and making essential medicines readily accessible. The establishment of a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility by Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited will not only streamline the procurement process but also reduce the cost of medicines.

The Indian company will bring its expertise in pharmaceutical manufacturing, including equipment and technology, to Zambia. In return, the government will provide necessary support in terms of market assurance, policy frameworks, and land allocation. This partnership is expected to address the challenges Zambia has faced in the past with delays in receiving medicine orders from foreign suppliers.

Ashok Saroha, President for International Business at Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, expressed gratitude to the Zambian government for approving the establishment of the pharmaceutical facility. He emphasized the company’s commitment to serving Zambia with direct supplies of essential medicines.

The new facility will not only meet the domestic demand for medicines but also serve as a regional hub, supplying essential drugs to neighboring countries facing similar challenges. In addition to addressing healthcare needs, the project will create much-needed employment opportunities and develop a skilled workforce in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Zambia’s High Commissioner to India, H.E Percy Chanda, and Health Advisor at the Embassy, Prof. Victor Mukonka.
