India’s President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, arrived in Malawi on Thursday, October 17, 2024, for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Malawian President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera. The visit, which runs until October 19, seeks to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations.
President Murmu’s arrival comes as Malawi and India celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. She is set to hold bilateral talks with President Chakwera, focusing on enhancing cooperation in key sectors. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on youth affairs, sports, and culture are expected to be signed during the visit.
On Friday, October 18, President Chakwera will host a State Banquet in her honor at Kamuzu Palace.
President Murmu’s trip to Malawi is part of a larger three-nation tour of Africa, which has already seen her visit Algeria and Mauritania. It marks the first visit by an Indian Head of State to these African nations.
Upon her arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, President Murmu was welcomed by Vice President Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi, along with senior government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo and Health Minister Khumbize Chiponda Kandodo.
