Tanger, Morocco – Vice President Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi has called for increased international collaboration to ensure effective implementation of sustainable ocean governance strategies. Speaking at the African Consultation meeting in Tangier, Morocco, ahead of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, Dr. Usi emphasized the importance of aligning national policies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 14), particularly in areas of conservation, sustainable use, and resilience-building.
Dr. Usi noted that while Malawi is a landlocked country, its participation in the meeting is significant due to its stewardship of Lake Malawi, one of Africa’s largest freshwater bodies, holding 20% of the world’s freshwater.
The summit, hosted by Morocco’s Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests Dr. Mohammed Sadik, aims to foster global cooperation and promote sustainable ocean practices.
