New York, United States – King Letsie III of Lesotho led his country’s delegation to the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 24, 2024. The theme of this year’s High-Level Week was “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
During the UNGA session, Lesotho’s delegation will participate in high-level discussions on various global issues, including the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, global security and health, and climate change. The annual UNGA event is a crucial platform for international diplomacy and cooperation.
On the sidelines of the UNGA, Queen Masenate Mohato Bereng Seeiso of Lesotho, with support from the United Nations Lesotho, hosted a side event titled “Ntoa ea Lipitsana — When women take action, a safer world is possible.” This historic event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring peace in homes, schools, and public spaces for all children and women.
Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was a keynote speaker at the side event. He emphasized the significance of social inclusion, mental well-being, and supporting people with disabilities, stating that true peace and dignity for all can only be achieved when the most vulnerable members of society are empowered and included.
Several notable dignitaries attended the side event, including the First Ladies of Finland, Botswana, Eswatini, Seychelles, and Zimbabwe’s Minister of Tourism and Hospitality. The First Lady of Finland spoke about the transformative role of education in creating peaceful and inclusive societies, while the First Lady of Botswana addressed the pressing issue of gender-based violence and shared strategies to protect women and girls in her country.
