Ondo State, Nigeria – Youth-led civil society organizations in Ondo State are stepping up in the fight against climate change after a successful two-day training organized by The Green Institute, supported by the Network of Youth for Sustainable Initiative (NGYouthSDGs), and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Abuja. Held on September 20-21, the event aimed to equip young leaders with the skills to drive local climate initiatives and advocate for policy reforms.
The training attracted over 100 participants, with 27 attending in person and 81 joining virtually. The program focused on enhancing the capacity of youth-led groups to lead climate action, covering critical topics such as climate communication, project planning, and community adaptation strategies.
Participants reported a significant 90% increase in their understanding of climate policy and advocacy techniques, enabling them to better influence local and national climate action. Each of the 11 participating CSOs developed comprehensive local climate action plans to address issues like deforestation, flooding, and desertification. Interactive sessions also boosted awareness about community-led climate solutions, motivating participants to take immediate action in their local areas.
“This initiative is about enabling those most affected by climate change to take control of the solutions,” said Foluke Arijeniwa, Program Coordinator at The Green Institute. “We are committed to equipping youth, women, and persons with disabilities with the tools needed to create impactful change.”
The training aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goals, including Climate Action, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities, by prioritizing inclusivity and fostering collaboration among youth, women, and marginalized groups.
Following the training, The Green Institute plans to host a Community Dialogue session later this month, bringing together government representatives, local stakeholders, and community members to discuss climate adaptation strategies and ensure that grassroots voices are included in policymaking.
