Windhoek, Namibia – Namibia’s state-owned power utility, NamPower, has announced plans to construct the country’s largest solar power plant with the assistance of two Chinese firms. The project, estimated to cost 1.4 billion Namibian dollars (approximately $78.33 million), will add 100 megawatts to Namibia’s current power capacity.
The solar power plant is expected to alleviate the country’s dependence on electricity imports from neighboring countries, Zambia and South Africa. By increasing domestic power generation, Namibia aims to stabilize future electricity tariffs, support economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability.
The German development bank KfW is providing 80% of the project’s funding, while NamPower will contribute the remaining 20%. Chinese companies China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd have been contracted to build the plant, which is expected to be completed within 18 months. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2026.
