Beijing, China – September 3, 2024: Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has lauded Huawei Technologies for its significant contributions to the country’s digital infrastructure development. During a meeting with Huawei’s Technical Management Team led by Vice President Li Junfeng in Beijing, President Chakwera expressed his gratitude for the company’s cutting-edge solutions and commitment to Malawi’s digital transformation.
Accompanied by Minister of Information and Digitalisation Moses Kunkuyu, President Chakwera highlighted the successful implementation of the Fibre Backbone Project by Huawei, which culminated in the inauguration of Malawi’s first state-of-the-art National Data Centre in Blantyre. This milestone positioned Malawi as a key player in the global digital landscape.
The President also expressed his keen interest in collaborating with Huawei on several initiatives, including the Smart Village Initiative for rural communities, the establishment of technical training centers for ICT skills development, and the implementation of smart agriculture solutions to support large-scale farming initiatives.
Huawei’s Managing Director for Malawi, Gomez Gu, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s digitalization efforts, particularly in rural areas through microgrid solutions and computing technologies.
Minister Kunkuyu announced that the government is preparing to launch the first Smart Villages project, which aims to increase connectivity and access to online services in rural areas.
President Chakwera’s meeting with Huawei was part of his ongoing engagement with Chinese companies on the sidelines of the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.
