Johannesburg, South Africa – A South African sprinter of Nigerian descent, Udeme Okon, has secured a gold medal for South Africa in the men’s 400m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Okon’s victory has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning South Africa’s stance on immigration and citizenship.

The 18-year-old came from behind to win the gold medal, clocking a time of 45.69 seconds. His victory follows in the footsteps of Lythe Pillay, who won the same title for South Africa in 2022.

Okon’s success comes amid a disappointing performance from Nigerian athletes at the championships. Despite the country’s strong track and field tradition, Nigerian competitors have struggled to make a significant impact.

The victory has prompted discussions on social media about the complex relationship between Nigeria and South Africa, particularly regarding immigration and citizenship. Some Nigerians have expressed frustration over South Africa’s treatment of Nigerian citizens, citing recent incidents such as the xenophobic attacks against Nigerian model Chidinma Adetshina.

However, many South Africans have embraced Okon’s achievement, celebrating his talent and contributions to the country. Some have even expressed support for him despite his Nigerian heritage.
