Cape Town, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has affirmed that Africa remains at the heart of South Africa’s foreign policy. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Ramaphosa detailed the country’s commitment to strengthening the African Union (AU) and its role in promoting peace, stability, and development across the continent.
Ramaphosa addressed concerns raised by an uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Member of Parliament, who questioned whether South Africa’s foreign policy aligns more with Western interests than those of Africa. The President responded by emphasizing South Africa’s dedication to African unity and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aimed at removing trade barriers and boosting intra-African trade.
He highlighted South Africa’s involvement in resolving conflicts in Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan, as well as the country’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic as AU Chair in 2020. During this time, South Africa led efforts to secure medical supplies and international funding for the continent.
Ramaphosa also noted South Africa’s success in advocating for the African Union’s inclusion as a full member of the G20. He mentioned that South Africa plans to place African interests prominently on the agenda during its G20 Presidency next year. Additionally, he referenced the participation of 46 African countries, including 20 Heads of State, at last year’s BRICS summit in Johannesburg.
On the issue of foreign policy, Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s non-alignment stance, stating that the country maintains an independent approach focused on promoting national interests and human rights while working with all nations for global peace.
The President also discussed his recent visit to Angola, where he invited Angolan President João Lourenço for an official visit to South Africa. He indicated that the agenda for the visit is still being developed, with expected discussions on security matters, including the illicit trade and transport of illegal substances between the two countries. Relevant Ministers will assist in preparing for the visit, and their findings will be presented during the discussions.
