Tokyo, Japan – August 24, 2024 – Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, met with her Seychellois counterpart, Louis Sylvestre Radegonde, to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
Minister Kamikawa highlighted the recent upgrade of Japan’s embassy in Seychelles and expressed her expectations for further strengthening bilateral ties. She also congratulated Seychelles on its appointment as the Chair of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and emphasized the importance of connectivity in the region, aligning with the goals of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) initiative.
Minister Radegonde expressed gratitude for Japan’s support in human resource development and other areas. He also acknowledged the importance of maritime security and expressed appreciation for Japan’s cooperation in capacity building for maritime law enforcement agencies.
The two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to working together to promote a free and open international order based on the rule of law. They also agreed to further develop Japan-Seychelles relations ahead of the upcoming TICAD 9 conference.
The ministers exchanged views on international cooperation, including Security Council reform and the situations in Ukraine and North Korea.
