Berlin, Germany – President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera witnessed a significant milestone in Malawi’s energy sector on Friday as the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Re-Thinking Foundation for a 50-megawatt solar farm project.
The MoU, inked by Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola and Tauber Solar of Berlin, Germany, promises to enhance Malawi’s energy capacity and create jobs. The solar farm will be developed in partnership with Mzuzu University (Mzuni) and Sun Power Africa Limited.
President Chakwera, who has been vocal about expanding Malawi’s energy grid, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “This MoU is a testament to our commitment to harnessing renewable energy and ensuring a brighter future for our nation,” he stated.
The project is expected to provide practical learning opportunities for Mzuni students studying engineering and electrical fields. Minister Matola emphasized the economic benefits, noting that the solar farm will create employment opportunities for Malawians, especially the youth.
Zeno Fleck, Shareholder and Chief Executive Officer of Tauber Solar Group, echoed the sentiment. “This project is not only a sound business investment but also a significant contribution to Malawi’s development,” he said. “We anticipate starting construction within four weeks and investing approximately €70 million.”
Mzuni Vice Chancellor, Professor Wales Singini, expressed excitement about the university’s involvement. “Our goal is to equip our students with practical knowledge in renewable energy while also generating revenue to support our operations,” he explained.
The university has been actively working on the solar farm project, conducting feasibility studies and securing necessary approvals from the government and ESCOM, Malawi’s electricity utility.
