Abuja, Nigeria – At least 10 farmers were killed in a brutal attack by gunmen on a village in northern Niger state on Wednesday.
Residents of Allawa community in Shiroro local government area reported the incident to Reuters on Thursday. The armed assailants, known locally as bandits, ambushed the farmers while they were working in their fields.
“The farmers were trapped and 10 killed yesterday evening in their respective farms,” said Hassan Abubakar, a local resident.
Another resident, Indamishe Auwal, who helped recover the bodies, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and the ongoing insecurity in the region. “Shiroro is bleeding. Our people are suffering and bandits have taken over our farmlands,” Auwal said.
The Niger state police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the attack.
