Maputo, Mozambique – Malawi President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, for crucial talks with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi. The visit, which began on Wednesday morning, focuses on strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
Chakwera, accompanied by First Lady Monica Chakwera, was welcomed at Maputo International Airport by Mozambican Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Hermenigildo Caitano, along with High Commissioners Wezi Moyo and Alexander Manjati. The couple then moved to the Polana Serene Hotel before heading to the Presidential Office for bilateral discussions.
The primary outcome of the visit is expected to be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) covering several key areas. This includes the enhancement of a 41-megawatt power interconnection project initiated in 2022 and the refurbishment of the Nacala railway line. The railway upgrade is anticipated to facilitate smoother trade and movement of goods between Malawi and Mozambique.
The MOU will also address trade, infrastructure, and the formalization of petroleum product transport. In recognition of his efforts to bolster bilateral ties, President Chakwera will receive an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations and Leadership from Joaquim Chissano University.
