Johannesburg, South Africa – Renowned South African actress Connie Chiume passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 72. The news was confirmed by her family in a statement.
Chiume, a household name in South Africa, was celebrated for her roles in numerous television shows, including Rhythm City, Zone 14, and more recently, Gomora. Her international breakthrough came with her appearance in the Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther, where she portrayed Zawavari, a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council.
The actress, who began her career as a teacher, garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout her career. She was recognized for her powerful performances in productions such as Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, Soul City, and Zone 14.
Beyond her television work, Chiume also made a significant impact on the big screen, with notable roles in films like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Beyoncé’s The Lion King. Her most recent projects included Heart of the Hunter and the TV series Soon Comes Night.
