Lusaka, Zambia – The outgoing UNAIDS Country Director, Dr. Tharcisse Barihuta, paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Mulambo Haimbe to officially conclude his tenure in Zambia. During the meeting held at Charter House in Lusaka, both officials expressed satisfaction with the strong partnership between Zambia and UNAIDS.
Minister Haimbe commended Dr. Barihuta for his dedicated service and acknowledged UNAIDS’ significant contributions to Zambia’s health sector. He reiterated the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and pledged continued collaboration with the UN agency.
While lauding Zambia’s strides in HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, Dr. Barihuta expressed concern over the potential for new infections. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy involving multiple stakeholders to combat the disease effectively. The UNAIDS chief also called for increased donor funding to support these efforts.
Dr. Barihuta has served in Zambia since 2019.
