Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria and Mexico are dedicated to expanding their bilateral trade relations, which currently stand at a modest value of approximately $180 million. The Mexican ambassador to Nigeria Alfredo Miranda said this in an interview in Abuja on Monday.

According to Miranda, Mexico recently committed approximately $100 million to import hibiscus flowers from Nigeria, locally known as zobo, which are in high demand in the country. He stated that to strengthen trade relations between the two countries, two Mexican business delegations recently visited Nigeria, noting that “it’s a work in progress.”

“The main challenge is that most Mexican businessmen prefer to do business with the U.S. because of our close proximity and their prompt payments,” the envoy added. The diplomat highlighted that Mexico’s strategic location in Central America, near the U.S., positions it as a gateway to Latin America.

According to the ambassador, Mexico’s foreign policy is grounded in principles outlined in Article 89, Section 10, of its constitution, including respect for international law, equality and independence of sovereign states, and non-intervention in other countries’ domestic affairs.

Miranda also emphasized that promoting bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation are key aspects of Mexico’s foreign policy.
