Imo State, Nigeria – The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a notorious drug lord, Joachin Chikaodi Mbonu (42). Mbonu, the alleged leader of a major methamphetamine cartel, was apprehended on July 5th at his opulent mansion in Umuomi village, Imo State.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Mbonu’s cartel operated across the South-East and South-South regions, distributing large quantities of the dangerous psychoactive substance, methamphetamine, also known locally as “Mkpuru mmiri.” The agency had been tracking the cartel for weeks based on intelligence reports.
The raid on Mbonu’s mansion yielded a significant amount of evidence. Officers seized nearly 420 grams of processed methamphetamine, precursor chemicals like iodine and sodium bicarbonate, a pump action gun with ammunition, and electronic weighing scales.
“This arrest marks the dismantling of a major drug syndicate responsible for flooding our streets with this deadly substance,” said Babafemi.
Further investigations revealed Mbonu’s escape from South Africa, where he reportedly honed his methamphetamine production skills after facing drug trafficking charges. Upon returning to Nigeria, he established clandestine labs in remote villages to evade detection.
The NDLEA also raided other locations linked to Mbonu’s associates, seizing additional drugs and another pump action gun. One associate, Kenneth Chibuike Ofoegbu (34), was arrested alongside Mbonu at the Imo mansion. Another associate, Odoemenam Pedro Chinedu, remains at large. Authorities have marked two of Mbonu’s mansions for potential forfeiture to the federal government.
