Rwandans living in the United States came together to commemorate Liberation Day, a day marking the country’s hard-won freedom and remarkable journey from devastation to prosperity. The event resonated with a spirit of resilience and determination.
Rwanda’s Ambassador to the US, Mathilde Mukantabana, addressed the gathering, praising the nation’s unwavering spirit. “We have come this far because we took ownership of our challenges,” she declared. Ambassador Mukantabana emphasized the importance of self-reliance and ambition, urging young Rwandans to leverage their talents for a brighter future. She quoted President Paul Kagame, reminding everyone, “Real liberation only begins when the guns fall silent. Rwanda is yours to protect, defend, and make prosperous.”

Rwanda’s progress drew praise from Ambassador Hilda Mapfudze, Permanent Representative of the African Union in Washington, D.C. She lauded the country as “a model of rising from the ashes,” commending President Kagame’s leadership and the nation’s impressive economic growth.

Bonafide Tuyishime, a young Rwandan diaspora member, shared his experience of a transformed homeland. “Today, children can dream big, knowing their aspirations will be supported,” he stated, highlighting the ample opportunities available to the next generation. “This room itself is filled with young Rwandans who, with the support of our country, have achieved their dreams. I am one such lucky person who has benefited tremendously from the opportunities offered by the newly liberated Rwanda,” Tuyishime concluded.
