Streaming giant Netflix is set to premiere a captivating historical drama titled “House of Ga’a” on July 26th. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the film promises a thrilling exploration of power, betrayal, and the dark side of ambition.

House of Ga’a centers around the life of Bashorun Ga’a, a ruthless 18th-century kingmaker who rose to prominence within the Oyo Empire. The film delves into Ga’a’s cunning tactics, where he employed both deceit and mysticism to solidify his control. However, viewers will witness a dramatic downfall as Ga’a’s reign is ultimately cut short by a shocking act of treachery, orchestrated by someone within his own inner circle.

The production boasts a star-studded cast featuring prominent Nollywood actors like Femi Branch, Funke Akindele, and Toyin Abraham.

A Glimpse into the Historical Context

The film sheds light on a pivotal moment in the Oyo Empire’s history. The empire, known for its cosmopolitan makeup and vast influence, was governed by a complex power structure. At the helm stood the Alaafin, the supreme ruler, while the Basorun held significant judicial and legislative authority.

Historically, the Basorun position was often filled by individuals of Ibariba/Batoonu/Borgu descent, while the Alaafin typically hailed from Oyo origin. This diverse leadership fostered a unique national identity that transcended ethnicity.

However, “House of Ga’a” explores a period of growing tension within the Oyo Empire. The film tackles the escalating conflict between the Alaafin and the Oyomesi, a council led by the Basorun, as they vied for control over the empire’s expanding territories and newfound wealth.

The appointment of Ga’a as Basorun marked a turning point. A decorated military leader, Ga’a wielded immense power even before assuming the official position. Upon his rise, he strategically exploited the existing rivalry between the Alaafin and the Oyomesi, manipulating both sides to further his own ambitions.

Ga’a’s strategy involved securing the unwavering loyalty of the Oyomesi before gradually stripping them of their influence. He then resorted to a series of ruthless tactics, including assassinations, to weaken the Alaafin’s authority and reduce the position to a mere figurehead.

For over two decades, Ga’a effectively ruled the Oyo Empire as an autocrat, controlling domestic affairs, foreign relations, and military campaigns. The film promises to depict the brutality with which Ga’a not only expanded the empire’s borders but also maintained his iron grip on power.
