Johannesburg, South Africa – Wits University is revamping its approach to student success, with a focus on data-driven programs, integrated support systems, and a stronger student voice. A recent Imbizo, a gathering of key stakeholders, highlighted areas for improvement and promising new initiatives.
“Student success underpins all operations at Wits,” said Prof. Nicole De Wit-Billings, Senior Director of Academic Affairs. “We need to define success beyond grades and include well-being and overall student experience.”
The Imbizo brought together representatives from across the university, including faculty advisors, student support services, and student leaders. Discussions centered on a more holistic approach to student support, integrating academic and psychosocial services.
“Historically, support services have operated in silos,” said De Wit-Billings. “This initiative aims to create a more unified front, ensuring students know where to find the help they need.”
Understanding Student Needs
A key element of the new strategy is data-driven decision making. Findings from the 2024 First Years Experience (FYE) survey revealed low attendance at workshops designed to ease the transition to university life. “Students cited lack of awareness, scheduling conflicts, and technical issues,” said Dr. Zena Richards, Manager of the Student Transitions and Persistence Unit (STPU).
The survey also showed a gap in awareness between faculties, with students in Humanities more likely to attend workshops. “Understanding why students are hesitant to participate is crucial,” said Karuna Singh from Student Affairs.
Student Voice Takes Center Stage
Caitlin Leigh Thomas, a Wits graduate pursuing Chemical Engineering, provided valuable insights from a student perspective. She praised the Gateway to Success program for first-year students but emphasized the need for better integration between support services and classroom learning.
Students also raised concerns about the impact of course evaluations. Evaluations Coordinator Nompumelelo Mazibuko reassured students that their feedback is used to improve teaching and learning.
Empowering Students with Information
To streamline access to support services, the Analytics and Institutional Researcher Unit (AIRU) has developed a Student Success Database. This user-friendly online platform provides a searchable list of all available resources.
The Imbizo showcased several existing tools and technologies being utilized to track student progress and inform decision-making.
