Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto of Kenya intensified his outreach to religious leaders on Saturday, meeting with bishops from the African Independent Pentecostal Church Africa (AIPCA) at State House. This follows a similar session with Catholic Church leaders the previous day as part of efforts to rally support ahead of crucial multi-sectoral talks.
The meeting, attended by 96 bishops led by Archbishop Samson Muthuri, focused on addressing contentious issues within the recently withdrawn Finance Bill, 2024. Ruto highlighted the urgency of starting talks within the next 14 days to tackle concerns raised, including austerity measures and anti-corruption strategies.
During the gathering, Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating job opportunities through initiatives like the Affordable Housing Programme, digital job creation, and industrialization projects.
The Finance Bill’s withdrawal came amid widespread public protests, prompting Ruto to advocate for comprehensive discussions on managing national finances, addressing debt, and balancing budget deficits.
