Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wrapped up its 28th Technical Meeting on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention, charting a course for enhanced regional cooperation. Held from June 24th to 26th, the meeting brought together representatives from the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and various stakeholders.

A key takeaway is the renewed emphasis on building joint capacities to prevent conflict. Participants agreed to leverage cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and geographic information systems (GIS) to strengthen early warning systems. Additionally, improved training programs will equip experts to address evolving regional and continental security threats.

The meeting underscored the importance of fostering regional self-reliance. A strong consensus emerged on the need to develop internal expertise, reducing dependence on external consultants. This will facilitate peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing within RECs.

The importance of inter-regional collaboration was also highlighted. Participants stressed the need for harmonized efforts across North, Central, West, and South Africa. Joint nominations and coordinated actions were identified as crucial for effectively tackling security challenges. Regular meetings between directors and chairs of various RECs on the sidelines of key summits will ensure seamless coordination and collaboration on early warning and prevention.

The strategic use of the Peace Fund was also discussed, with participants committing to submitting work plans to Ghana. Leveraging the available $5 million through the AU and RECs will support various peacebuilding initiatives.

Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, Acting Director of the ECOWAS Early Warning Directorate, emphasized the need for continuous improvement. The meeting reaffirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to developing robust early warning systems capable of identifying and mitigating threats. Dr. Onwuka highlighted the progress made in fostering collaboration among RECs and strengthening regional expertise.

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment to implementing the agreed-upon resolutions.
