ABUJA, Nigeria, June 14 – President Bola Tinubu has urged for enhanced collaboration between Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to combat cybercrime, terrorism, and other related crimes. This appeal was made during a meeting at the State House in Abuja with FBI Director Christopher Asher Wray.

Tinubu emphasized the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and the U.S. in fighting financial crimes and terrorism. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, cybercrimes, and sextortion, noting the active involvement of multiple agencies.

“It is an honor to receive Director Christopher Wray, leader of an organization renowned for its procedural sophistication and excellence. Your visit underscores the significance of the Nigeria-U.S. partnership in law enforcement,” Tinubu stated.

He stressed the need for international cooperation to tackle sophisticated crimes and called on the U.S. to provide technology and expertise to developing countries. As Chairman of ECOWAS, Tinubu also emphasized Nigeria’s collaboration with other West African nations in fighting economic and related crimes.

The President underlined the importance of education in combating poverty, a key factor in criminal activities. He expressed satisfaction with the efforts of Nigerian agencies in reducing crime and highlighted their representation at the meeting.

FBI Director Wray expressed his intent to strengthen the partnership between Nigerian and U.S. law enforcement agencies. He commended Tinubu’s leadership in combating regional terrorism and acknowledged the importance of the Nigeria-U.S. relationship.

“We appreciate your vision in re-engineering the role of the Office of the NSA to effectively coordinate counter-terrorism efforts, which has already yielded success against ISIS in West Africa and other terrorist groups,” Wray stated. He assured continued support for Nigeria in areas such as counter-terrorism, cybercrimes, kidnapping, joint investigations, and intelligence sharing.

Security chiefs present at the meeting included National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Director-General of the Department of State Services Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chief of Defence Intelligence Agency Major-General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Olanipekun Olukoyede, and National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre Major-General Adamu Laka.
