Cape Town – Chief Justice Raymond Zondo presided over the swearing-in ceremony of hundreds of Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday, marking the first sitting of the National Assembly in South Africa’s seventh Parliament. The ceremony, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), served as a significant moment for the nation, according to Zondo.
“This is an opportunity for us to reflect on our journey as a nation,” Zondo addressed the House. “We must identify our past mistakes alongside our successes to ensure we don’t repeat those errors as we enter the fourth decade of our democracy.”
The Chief Justice extended his congratulations to the newly sworn-in MPs while reminding them of the crucial role they play within the National Assembly.
“You are entrusted with the responsibility of shaping South Africa’s future by crafting our laws,” Zondo emphasized. “As you take this oath, remember the immense trust placed upon you by the people of South Africa. You have been given the honor and privilege to serve in this esteemed body.”
Zondo underscored the significance of the oath taken by MPs, which binds them to loyalty to the Republic, adherence to the Constitution, and respect for all laws. He further stressed that this oath carries a strong moral obligation, resting “binding… on their conscience.”
The ceremony continued with the nomination of candidates for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.
