Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, accused the United States of hypocrisy on Friday regarding ongoing protests in Armenia and Georgia.
Zakharova compared statements from the US Embassies in both countries. The US Embassy in Armenia called for responsible protests, while the Embassy in Georgia appeared to support ongoing demonstrations there.
“So much for democracy,” Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel. “In one case, the US doesn’t condemn Armenian authorities for suppressing rallies, while actively supporting what they call riots organized by Western foreign agents in Georgia.”
She characterized this as a blatant example of the US applying a “rules-based world order” selectively, changing the rules to suit its own interests.
This accusation comes amid strained relations between Georgia and the West. Earlier, the US State Department threatened visa sanctions against Georgian officials and law enforcement personnel in response to a controversial law on foreign agents.
